sourpony’s fault for encouraging me.) Written for the
xoverland drabble challenge love state.
“There’s not going to be any compromising here, Michael. Not this time.”
“What makes this one different?”
“Lex Luthor is a monster. He needs to be stopped.”
“This is personal for you.” He had never seen her like this before, never seen her so affected.
“It’s more than personal and I will do whatever it takes.” She said, “So you go back and tell your boss that I am done playing nice. This is his one and only warning, any agent he sends to get in my way will be removed from the equation.”
“You’re a lot of things Chloe, but a murderer isn’t one of them.”
“You keep telling me I don’t know you, Michael. Well you don’t know me either.”
“What’s so special about Luthor?”
“You tell me. You’re the one protecting him.”
“It’s an assignment.”
“And that’s all you care about right, the job? Well that’s where we differ.” Chloe told him, “You don’t ask questions because you don’t want to know the answers. I have to ask the questions and I don’t get the luxury of not knowing the answers. You’re right though Michael, I’m not a killer. But I promise you, when I’m done, Lex will be begging to be put out of his misery. And that goes for anyone else who tries to stands in my way.”
He knew she wasn’t lying, knew enough about her to know that this wasn't an act. He didn’t know what her past with Luthor was, hell he barely knew anything about her past, but whatever Luthor had done, he couldn’t help but think he was part of the reason she was there now. That he was part of what led her to this life.
“If I see you on a mission, you know that I can’t help you. That I won’t be able to protect you.”
“I’ve always known that.”
“Luthor…” He looked away, trying to figure out what he was doing giving information to the enemy. But then he had always had trouble seeing her as the enemy. “He’s meeting with someone Thursday. Percy has all hands on deck, ready for trouble. He’s being tight lipped about it, I don’t know anything more than that.”
Her expression was so confused he almost wanted to laugh, but the confusion slowly disappeared, replaced by a small smile.
She stepped closer, until she was right in front of him and he realized it was the closest they had ever been. Her hand reached out, her thumb coming up to trace his jaw lightly and unwillingly he closed his eyes.
This wasn’t supposed to be happening. He should stop her from continuing. Her fingers ghosted upwards, tracing his lips before disappearing altogether.
“Thank you.”
She said it so quietly he wondered if he had imagined it. The brush of her lips against his own told him he hadn’t. He reached out but only found air, and when he opened his eyes she was gone.
