One Night

Once upon a time they had tried to have a relationship, had given it everything they could, had loved each other entirely and completely. But they had found that with their lives, they couldn’t give each other everything. They loved each other, but not enough to walk away from what they considered important.

So they had this. One a night a year when they could be together, when they could forget all their problems and responsibilities and lose themselves in each other. It was a night full of passion and laughter and secret smiles that no one else ever got to see. She brought out everything in him that he thought he had lost over the years. Made him feel like he was a kid again, made him feel like he was experiencing everything for the first time, every time. He loved it when she ran her hands through his hair, when she called him cowboy with a mocking smile, and when she looked at him as though he was everything. And he never wanted those days to end. For a few moments every year, he gave up everything he believed in just so he could be with her. But he always took it back, she made sure he always did.

“You help make the world a better place,” she told him, “I’m not worth giving that up for.”

Elliot thought that she was, but he knew better than to argue with her. She always won.

Middle of Nowhere

She had driven for a long time, much longer than she had wanted too, but she had to be sure that she was far enough away, that there was no way Bobby could find and stop her. She had to do this, she knew he would hate her for it, knew that he would never forgive her or himself if he found out, but she couldn’t live without him. He had been the one that had made everything better, the one that had fixed her, had made her able to love again. But without him, all that he made her would disappear, she would disappear along with him. And she would rather him resent her, rather him hate her for what she did, then live in world where he wasn’t around to feel anything.

And that was why she was there in the middle of nowhere, praying to whoever was listening that the demon would heed her call. Because she would give anything to see him smile again, give anything to feel his touch again, to hear his voice again. He had fixed her, had given her back her life, and now she was going to do the same for him.

An Unexpected Partner:

When he told her he was an angel of the Lord, she had laughed in his face. She had told him that he wasn’t the first confused man she had met, and that he wouldn’t be the last. Then he had shown her his wings and she had laughed harder. She had given up on believing in angels, on believing that there was anyone out there looking after her other than herself. And suddenly there was proof of it right in front of her. He hadn’t understood her laughter, hadn’t been able to understand the concept of irony or bitterness. She hadn’t explained it to him.

Slowly they built a relationship, based on necessity and not trust. She would not let herself believe in someone like him, wouldn’t allow herself to believe in the possibility of what he might mean. He could not be her friend, because he could not understand her grief, could not understand her reservations, could not understand her. He couldn’t be her savior because she did not want to be saved. So he became her partner, gave her what she needed and never took more than she could offer. Expected of her only what he could return.

She had a role to play, an important part of an oncoming war, but he promised to always be beside her, to always do what he could. And despite her reservations, she found herself believing him.

Dust:

Chloe watched the car pull away, dust circling all around her. She felt the first tears fall and knew that she was making a mistake. She shouldn’t have let him go. She should have fought harder to keep him, tried harder to find a way to make it work. But it was a mistake she didn’t know how to fix. She couldn’t give up her life and he couldn’t give up his. The world needed them to help save it in their own ways. So she stayed there, long after the last of the dust had settled, hoping desperately that he would come back but knowing that he wouldn’t.
